The Maldives consists of over 1100 low lying islands and was introduced to tourism in the early 1970s. The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) declared that the Maldives has shown a promising growth of 8.5% on average (2009).
As of September 2011, the country has an occupancy rate of 78.7% which is an increase of
3.8% from the previous year and the tourist arrivals have increased by 17.7%, both of which
are extremely important tourism indictors.
